Bringing Joy and Harmony: A Heartfelt Performance at Carewest Signal Pointe
On May 1, 2025, Calgary, Canada welcomed a sunny and vibrant spring morning, as if spring had truly arrived. On this warm day, the Calgary Jiang Zhe Shanghai Association organized members from various interest groups to visit the Carewest Signal Pointe nursing home for a heartfelt and artistic performance. This event was part of the Golden Years Wellness Program.
Early in the morning, the association’s venue was bustling with activity: the choir was rehearsing with resounding voices, the qipao team was gracefully practicing their walk, and the folk music ensemble was harmoniously coordinating their performance. Everyone was dressed in their performance attire, meticulously applying makeup and rehearsing, ensuring everything was well-prepared. At 11:30 AM, the group set off on time, taking the C-Train to the 69th Street station. After disembarking, they walked to the nursing home under the guidance of Mr. Liu Xinjian. Around noon, our coordinator, Ms. Yin Xiuwen, thoughtfully prepared steaming hot meat buns and fresh bananas from Costco for everyone—she drove nearly 100 kilometers to ensure that each performer could have a hot meal and replenish their energy after the journey.
At 1:25 PM, the performance officially began. The host, Ms. Chen Lu, delivered the opening remarks in both Chinese and English, extending greetings and blessings to the friends at the nursing home. The program was rich and diverse, featuring music and dance:
- Wind Ensemble: “Butterfly Lovers,” “Ode to Joy,” “Auld Lang Syne,” blending Chinese and Western cultures with deep emotions of Chinese classical love and the celebration of beauty and friendship in Western classics.
- Male Vocal Ensemble: Songs “Scarborough Fair,” “You Raise Me Up,” “Edelweiss,” evoking resonance and memories among the audience with familiar classics accompanied by wind instruments.
- Erhu Ensemble: “Horse Racing,” “Beautiful Night,” bringing festive excitement with vivid horse hoof sounds and gentle melodies to start the afternoon.
- Soft Ball Performance: “Red Mountain Blossoms Again,” a spirited performance expressing the rekindling of vitality and love for life, earning thunderous applause.
- Flute Solo: Mr. Wang Tieqiang performed the elegant melody from Bizet’s opera “L’Arlésienne,” evoking the lightness and brightness of southern France.
- Qipao Show: “Jiangnan Love,” with models gracefully showcasing the elegance of Oriental women and the romantic charm of Chinese water towns to soft and melodious music.
- Sunset Dance Troupe: “Good People, Good Dreams,” a warm and beautiful dance conveying the idea of “kindness in the heart, light in the dreams,” touching the audience.
- Rainbow Dance Troupe: “Love Song of the Blue Water Bay,” interpreting themes of love, nature, and harmony with delicate movements, bringing the performance to a graceful conclusion.
After the performance, the friends at the nursing home stood up and applauded, taking photos with us. One elderly person, due to limited mobility, specifically requested the performers to move outdoors for a photo, and everyone gladly obliged, fulfilling his wish. Laughter, applause, and sincere thanks filled the entire nursing home, with the elderly repeatedly saying in English, “Please come again! Welcome back anytime!” This warmth and emotion deeply touched every participant.
This performance not only brought joy and companionship to the elderly at the nursing home but also allowed us to experience happiness through giving. Such activities contribute to the integration and exchange between different ethnicities and cultures, strengthening mutual support and cooperation among various ethnic groups and vulnerable communities.

Welcome back anytime!”
