Photography Lecture for Seniors: How to Appreciate Photographic Works

On May 8, 2025, the Golden Years Wellness Project of the Calgary Jiang Zhe Shanghai Association hosted a unique photography lecture. On that sunny afternoon, the association’s activity room was filled with a warm atmosphere and cheerful laughter as everyone eagerly awaited the insightful sharing from senior member Mr. Lv Haifu, titled “How to Appreciate Photographic Works—Talking About Landscape and Documentary Photography in Conjunction with the ‘Haifu Photography Collection’.”

Mr. Lv Haifu, 79 years old, is a highly respected senior member of the association. He is passionate about life, art, and recording, and even more enthusiastic about capturing beautiful moments for others through his lens. Over the years, Mr. Lv has silently taken countless precious photos and videos for the association and various interest groups’ rehearsals, performances, and outdoor activities. Despite his low profile, he has won the love and admiration of everyone through his quiet dedication. At every association event, he can be seen carrying his camera, moving among the attendees, carefully capturing light and fleeting moments to preserve warm and touching memories for everyone.

At the beginning of the lecture, Mr. Lv introduced himself with simple and sincere words: “My name is Lv Haifu, my online name is ‘Haifu,’ and I come from Shanghai, China. I have been studying digital photography at the Shanghai Senior University since 2008, for 17 years now. Along the way, I have grown from a photography novice to a ‘grassroots photographer,’ and I am grateful for the guidance of my teachers, the support of my family, and the opportunities provided by the community and platforms.” His heartfelt words immediately resonated with many members present.

In the subsequent lecture, Mr. Lv, drawing upon his accumulated photographic works over the years and focusing on the theme of “How to Appreciate Photographic Works,” led everyone to deeply explore the charm of landscape and documentary photography. Through the display and detailed explanation of his photography collection, he provided an accessible analysis of key elements in photography such as light, composition, color, and emotional expression. He also shared practical techniques for selecting subjects, conceiving scenes, and telling stories through photographs.

During the lecture, the members listened with great interest and actively participated by asking questions from time to time, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere.

Particularly touching was Mr. Lv’s sharing about how he often conducts site surveys and selects locations several days in advance to capture the perfect images for a performance, all to leave the most flawless visual records for everyone on the day of the event. His professionalism and dedication to art deeply moved every listener present. Mr. Lv also shared many unforgettable experiences of capturing ideal shots, such as setting off before dawn in the cold dew and patiently waiting at the shooting location for several hours, or carrying heavy equipment under the scorching summer sun, sweating profusely while searching for the best angle. He said emotionally, “Sometimes, for a single shot, I would wait motionless in the snow for several hours until that ray of light just happened to fall on the angle I wanted to capture.” Whether it was the severe cold of winter or the scorching heat of summer, nothing could deter his persistent pursuit of light and shadow, all so that he would have no regrets at the moment of pressing the shutter.

This perseverance of “waiting for a photograph” is precisely what makes Mr. Lv so admirable as a photographer. He measures the beauty of light and shadow with his own footsteps and interprets the warmth of art with his resilience and dedication, leaving countless irreplaceable and precious moments for the Calgary Jiang Zhe Shanghai Association.

After the lecture, Mr. Lv specially reserved half an hour for a face-to-face Q&A session with everyone. He patiently and meticulously answered members’ questions about photography equipment, shooting angles, and lighting techniques, sharing his experiences and insights without reservation. Many members expressed that this photography class not only made them “understand” and “learn,” but also deeply felt Mr. Lv’s dedication and passion for art as a photographer.

Photography is not only an important part of Mr. Lv’s life but also a way for him to communicate with people and the world. He captures beauty with his lens and records warmth with his kindness. As he says, “Making friends through photography, exchanging skills, and pleasing the mind.” This is not just his motto but a perseverance and belief that has lasted for seventeen years.

The photography lecture was a complete success, not only enriching the members’ photography knowledge but also inspiring everyone’s enthusiasm for approaching art and loving life. Let us look forward to more wonderful sharing from Mr. Lv Haifu in the future, and let us cherish more beautiful memories belonging to the Calgary Jiang Zhe Shanghai Association in the sound of the shutter clicks time and time again.
